Sound Masking:

Sound Masking is the art of cloaking voice conversations within a room by introducing new sound signals to your room that are designed to protect your privacy, your confidentiality, and produce for you a more user friendly work space.

In order to explain how to make an environment - such as an office suite, counseling area, or open-office cubicle area - acoustically private, let's first define what we mean by saying there's a lack of speech privacy.  Speech Privacy is not simply a subjective matter of opinion - it's measurable and quantifiable according to ASTM standards.  So when we say that there's a lack of speech privacy in an environment, we're saying that the area has a low privacy index (PI) score. The privacy index is a way of measuring how intelligible speech is across a given space.

There are three ways you can improve your privacy index score - call them the "acoustical ABCs:"

You can Absorb sound with sound-absorbent panels or high-quality ceiling tiles; or
You can Block sound from bleeding through common floors or ceilings with dB-Bloc; or
You can Cover sound by installing a high quality sound masking system.

It's important to note that these three tools are not mutually-exclusive. You're looking for the end-result - the "final score," so to speak, which typically requires some mix of the ABC's in order to get you to your desired privacy index score. In most cases, that means achieving a PI score of at least 80%.
