Soundproofing a Sanctuary

Acoustic Challenge

With santuary sound design, the spoken word commands tightly controlled reverberation times in order to maximize speech clarity.  If the congregation can't discern speech, building a faithful following among a congregation can prove difficult.   in addition, the musical tones generated in the sanctuary will want to control their reverberations to maximize harmonics.  Members of the audience want the assurance that regardless of their seating location, they will experience superior acoustics with minimal "live" or "dead" spots in the room, and completely intelligible sound.

Soundproofing Treatment

By introducing a set of decorative, fire rated wall mounted Fabric Panels or ceiing mounted Ceiling Clouds into your sanctuary both the sound reflections and their reverberations within the room can be better controlled for quality sanctuary acoustics.   Reverberating sound waves within the room will be captured by absorption panels designed to convert sound to kinetic energy.  Diffusion panels can hep scatter the reflected sound waves to balance out the live and dead spots in the room.   Your product options for this auditorium sound treatment are listed in the Product Bin.

Acoustic Results

The Fabric Panels for sanctuary acoustics will capture and convert the unwanted background noise, dropping the reverberation time down to under 2.0 seconds.   This in turn will produce better speech clarity for the audience, and balance out the tones produced by the musicians.   The diffusion panels will help scatter the noise to deliver better balance spread throughout the room regardless of seat location.   This will make for a more enjoyable experience for the audience and help ensure their return.  Simulated results for soundproofing an auditorium are broadcast in our Sound Chamber.

The key to the success of your treatment relies more on Fabric Panel quantities introduced into the room than the actual location of the material.   Regardless of placement, sound will spread throughout the room like a balloon expanding.  Since every square foot of surface space in the room will accept sound wave reflections nearly simultaneously, there will be enough capture of first wave reflections to drop the background noise and produce the sound values you are seeking.

If your services are traditional, with choir and organ only, a 1" thick panel system is ideal.   If you are a contemporry service, with drums, guitars and other band instruments, you will want to bump the panel thickness up to 2".   This quadruples your ability to capture low base frequencies and impact sounds.

Most treatments will target side and back walls for treating a sanctuary for sound control.   If you wish to help scatter the sound for more equal distribution throighout the room, the Barrel Diffusors are a popular compliment to the Fabric Panels.   The ratio is typically 5-1.   For every 500 sq feet of Fabric Panel, add 100 sq feet of Barrel Diffusors, all wrapped in the same Guilford Cloth.
