Soundproofing a Swimming Pool

Acoustic Challenge

We get two calls for a swimming pool design soundproofing treatment.   The first request is to lower the noise levels in an indoor swimming pool caused by echo that fills the natatorium.  The second is to control the noise that emits from an indoor or outdoor pool pump.

Soundproofing Treatment

Suspend a set of VET Baffles or Tapestry banners from the ceiling.    These products are designed to absorb the unwanted sound within the room and control unwanted sound reflections.   If you have ceiling levels lower than 18', opt instead for a perimeter wall treatment using a waterproof sound panel.

For additional sound protection, hang sound control blankets around the perimeter of your pool pump location to combat noise exposure. Your sound proofing product options are listed in the NetWell Noise Control Product Bin.

Acoustic Results

The sounds reflecting around the room will be caught and converted by the baffles or sound panels.   As reverberation times collapse, background noise drops making the room more comfortable acoustically.    With sound control blankets suspended around the perimeter of the pump, you can trigger up to a 90% drop in decibels emitted from the pump's motor.   Simulated results for soundproofing a swimmin pool are broadcast in the Sound Chamber.

Indoor swimming pools are typically surrounded by hard reflective surfaces that support a shoe-box shaped room.   The walls and ceiling are often concrete or metal with a concrete floor surface surrounding the pool.   These washable surfaces accept high levels of moisture and condensation, but also reflect an average 97% of the sounds produced within the room.   The sound reflections inside this room are often loud and uncomfortable.   This makes it difficult to enjoy recreational time in the room, or instruct swimming or exercise classes.

The most popular treatment for this type of room is a set of vertically suspended baffles that can be spread in rows and columns throughout the ceiling.    If you have an exposed joist metal roof deck assembly, the baffles can hang in between the rows of joists and run flush to the bottom of the joists.   If you have a cement ceiling, you can suspend rows of cables over the pool and suspend the baffles from the cable.   In either case, the baffles can take the moisture in the air.   Be sure to ask for stainless steel grommets that will be more resistant to rust.

If you have lower ceilings or the baffles might interfere with your lighting, treat the top 1/3 of the wall around the perimeter of the room with a set of Clean Room Wall Panels.   These are compressed fiberglass panels wrapped in a waterproof PVF skin, custom cut to the size you like.   We place tabs on the back top of each panel, and punch grommets into the tabs for an easy mechanical installation.

In either of these treatments, the products are designed to repel moisture, they are class A fire rated, and will serve to collapse your sound reverberations down to acceptable levels.

The products for this treatment are listed in the Product Bin for swimming pool applications.
