Build Surround Sound Media Room

Problem: Could be twofold. First, to contain your noise to within your room, and second, to maximize the quality of sound created by your system.

Solution: Build a room within the room, if you wish, and add weight into the walls to help control the bleed out of the room. Then add the absorption panels to your exposed surface walls within the room to help convert your sound energy into kinetic energy.

One of the more popular calls we field. We need to first address the issue of isolation, and recommend you review our Stop Noise Bleed Through Common Wall or Stop Noise Bleed Through Ceiling/Floor sections. You may or may not want to opt for following this strategy. Especially if your room is already finished off. If you do opt to follow our advice on this isolation issue, you would need to add the density of our dB-Bloc material into your common surfaces, and seek to disconnect your wall surfaces as discussed on those two pages of this site.

Whether you've insulated for transmission loss or not, once your room is finished off, you'll need to add something into your room to help combat the issue of unwanted sound reverberation. Low, long flat noise waves stemming from bass tones are your primary culprit here. Especially if you have added in surround sound features with subwoofer enhancements.

The most popular sound absorption product in our mix is our 3" Pyramid Foam Panels. If you match their cost to their overall affect at all frequency bands including the low bass end, you realize your greatest return on your investment. These are 2'x2' squares that you mount to your walls with silicone adhesive or velcro. One obvious issue with any panel you mount in your room is appearance. We can't help you there. You have to decide based on the limited number of aesthetic acoustic panels on the market what would best suit your needs. Some love the look of the Pyramid, others do not.

An alternative material for great sound absorption within your entertainment room would be what you see on side walls in most movie theaters. At your local theater, you may see decorative cloth covering the side walls. Behind the cloth is a compressed fiberglass. Our Fabric Panels are the same concept. We can custom cut them to size and color. Go with the 2" thickness to maximize that pesky low bass noise. You can surface mount them to your walls, or recess them into cavities cut into your walls...like a wainscoting.

The panels are durable, attractive, colorful and do a great job at absorbing noise.

For those that seek a drop ceiling tile, we refer you to our Ceiling Tiles. Our tiles are unlike the standard tiles you might find from a local home building supplier. First, they're made from Melamine Foam...not fiberglass. Their absorption coefficients are often 1.5 times as effective as standard tiles. They are cut into 2'x2' squares, and have a backerboard glued to the backside that helps rest the tiles into place in your grid system. Bright white in color. You can spray them any color you wish or send us a paint chip and we'll do it for you.

These three products alone represent the most popular options for installation into your Surround Sound Theater Room. Your overall costs will depend on the quantities needed to condition your room, and that figure is determined by how big the room is. Call us to discuss, and we'll quote direct!
