Soundproofing an Office

Acoustic Challenge

Office design sound proofing treatments address two distinct office sound control goals.  The first is the need to contain and isolate one room's noise from the next for greater office privacy.   The second is the need to protect a group of employees in an office cubicle environment from one another's voices for better office room acoustics.

Soundproofing Treatment

For isolating one office from the next, refer to our Walls or Ceilings sections of this Applications Guide.   There we define for you the steps involved in room isolation and sound transmission loss for a better soundproof office.   We can also offer floor mounted room dividers or ceiling suspended acoustical curtains designed to split a larger room into smaller rooms.

As for the open air environment of an office cubicle setting, your options include replacing your cubicles with more a more sound attenuating cubicle system, installing a sound masking system  designed to disguise one another's voices for greater oral privacy and a better office sound system, or placing a set of sound absorption panels, acoustical panels or ceiling tiles around your room's perimeter to combat the unwanted sound reflections spreading around the room.   Your product options for office noise control are all listed in the Product Bin.

Acoustic Results

By isolating one room's noise from the next using the techniques outlined in our Walls or Ceilings section, you can trigger the 10-12 dB drops that are broadcast simulated at our Sound Chamber.    The open air cubicle setting will post different results depending on the treatment you subscribe to, but you can reasonably expect a 3-6 dB drop inside the room.   For more questions on soundproofing an office, call our  help desk at 1-800-638-9355.

Blocking Noise Bleed

For purposes of confidentiality and voice bleed in or out of a room, visit our Walls section of this Applications Guide to help understand how noise is transmitting through and what steps you can take to help control it.    The "density + disconnection" technique of adding dB-Bloc to your surface can trigger up to a 90% drop in the amount of noise bleeding through.

If your walls stop at the height of a ceiling tile system, check with your fire marshall and building owner to determine if extending the wall to the top of the roof is feasible.   If so, consider an extension of your wall using the vertically suspended QBS blankets.   If not, lay our Ceiling Caps down atop your existing ceiling tiles to help place an acoustic "lid" over your room.

If your ceiling is finished, treat it much like you would your wall using the same dB-Bloc treatment.   Note that placing absorption products on your walls or ceiling will not block noise from bleeding out.   Foam panels, cloth wrapped panels, wallcoverings and ceiling tiles absorb echoes within the room, but don't block noise from bleeding in or out through the surface.

If you are in a new build mode, frame the walls using a double wall or staggered-stud wall assembly.   If you are treating an existing wall, layer dB-Bloc and a set of horizontal firring strips beneath a new layer of drywall.   Our FabricBloc Panels are a decorative way to finish off your existing wall with an absorption panel that also serves to block noise.    If you're less concerned with the aesthetics, our QBS blankets suspended against the wall will also serve to deaden noise bleed.

Sound Quality Inside an Office

If your goal is to improve the sound quality inside the room, we target the collapse of the reflections within the office.   Absorption panels listed in our Product Bin will all serve to help control this background noise.   If mounting absorption wall or ceiling panels is not practical, consider the installation of a Voice Arrest Sound Masking system.   The masking system is designed to produce white noise that will disguise human voice conversations and help protect the privacy of individual conversations.

Foam panels are less costly than cloth wrapped Fabric Panels.   The Pyramids are the most popular foam product, they are continuous, seamless, easy to install, and come both polyurethane and melamine foam.     The melamine foam, Pyramids Plus, is the class A fire rated version that should be used inside a public building.  Whisperib Wallcovering is also a popular architectural wall treatment for an office setting.

In addition to absorbing unwanted sound wave reflections within the room, you also have the option to mask the sounds being produced, triggering more privacy over voice conversations.   Custom designed sound masking solutions are easy to design and self install, for more information and a free quote, click here!
